Wines to Get You Through Isolation & Social Distancing
We've put together a list of everyday, ready-to-drink-now wines that are perfect whether you're pairing them for a dinner with self-quarantined household or having a Zoom happy hour with friends.
1. Anne Joyeuse Malbec 2018
Malbec from the Pyrenees. Black fruit that is a little jammy but well structured. Slight chocolate notes. Deep and full flavors with a subtle creaminess at the end. Amazing value. Enjoy with barbecueof any kind.
2. Flaco 2018
Luscious fruit and a soft texture are served up in this Spanish wine made from the Tempranillo grape. It can actually be called somewhat complex which belies its unbelievable price tag. From Madrid.
3. Twisted 2018
From the Douro Valley in Portugal and made by pre-eminent port maker, Dirk Niepoort, this wine is elegant, warm and open, light to medium bodied with smooth tannins. It's made from the same grapes as Port wine but it is dry. Extremely food friendly and works well as an aperitif or with a meal.
1. Lobster Reef Sauvignon Blanc 2019
From Marlborough, New Zealand, a balanced and refreshing wine which boasts ripe pineapple, melon, guava and fresh green-leaf flavors accompanied by flinty
acidity, a slightly creamy texture and long, tingly finish.
8. Tintero Rosso NV
A blend of mainly Barbero and Dolcetto from the Piedmont. An easy, tasty, versatile red that is fruit driven with soft tannins. Great for casual meals. It's unfiltered and has a screw top.
7. Franco Roero Grignolino D'Asti 2018
Fresh raspberries on the palate of this lively, fruity, summer red made from the Grignolino grape in the Piedmont. It's refreshing, can be slightly chilled and is great for picnics, with pizza, and Italian cold meats.
6. Rasa Vineyards Occam's Razor 2017
A blend of cabernet sauvignon and syrah from Washington State. This red blend is perfect for grilled steaks. It's got substance and body, with 14.5 percent alcohol, but doesn't hit you over the head with jammy fruit. It's uncomplicated but very satisfying.
5. Ferrandiere Syrah 2017
Full bodied, fruit forward with good length. Lots of ripe dark berries, hints of white pepper and aromas of dark chocolate. Pretty good value from the Pyrenees. Good with meat, dark chocolate and cheese.
4. Gran Passione 2019
A rich, deeply colored blend of Merlot and Corvina grown in Italy's Veneto region. Full-bodied with good structure and a good balance between soft tannins and acidity. Generous palate of ripe red and black fruits with a long finish. Fantastic accompaniment to roasted or grilled meaats, game of mature, hard cheeses.
9. Ronco dei Pini Sauvignon 2019
Bright yellow in color this Sauvignon Blanc from the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region is striking for its elegant bouquet, characterized by herbal notes and a hint of pepper. The wine is dry and delicate with nicely balanced acidity.
8. Attems Pinot Grigio 2019
The Attems Pinot Grigio is a tribute to Italy's Friuli region and faithfully reflects the terroir from which it comes. Starting out with an impressively fruity bouquet, it is savory, tangy and vibrant with superb weight, texture and minerality.
7. Naipes Mus 2018
Organic and biodynamic. Garnacha Blanca grown at high altitude in limestone soils in the Navarra region. Aromatic, minerally and good acicity.
6. Hubert Brochard Sauvignon Blanc Les Carisannes 2018
From the Loire Valley, this Sauvignon Blanc really hits the spot on a hot day. It has bright, refreshing acidity, flavors of citrus, fresh herbs, and a flintiness that rivals much more expensive Loire Valley wines. Great companion to goat cheese, shellfish and vegetarian dishes.
5. Quinta De Chocapalha Arinto 2018
A fragrant light bodied wine from Portugal from the Arinto grape. Delicious fruit and good acidity. The wine is lively, perfumed and crisply textured. Think shellfish or white fish.
4. Berthier Coteaux Du Glennois Sauvignon Blanc 2018
This is a bright wine from the Loire Valley, full of crisp apple and citrus flavors. With its light texture, slightly yeasty character, herbal edge and final freshness, it is quite an attractive wine.
3. Ariddu Grillo 2019
Grillo, a cool white grape from Sicily, produces this crisp and savory, mineral-driven, wine with an exuberant burst of stone fruit and citrus notes on the long, polished finish. Enjoy with grilled fish, tempura, pasta, and ripe cheeses.
2. Max Ferdinand Richter Riesling Classic 2017
This is a dry Riesling by a master Riesling producer. It has a fresh and light aroma with a taste of citrus, melons and grass (divine!). Great acidity to balance the very slight touch of sweetness. A mineral finish. I love Riesling with spicy dishes and barbecue.
10. Inama Soave Classico 2019
Crisp and savory, this refreshing white has lovely aromas of white stone fruit and wild flowers. The tangy palate doles out ripe pear, apple and citrus before a white-almond finish. A versatile wine that goes with everything.
9. Fontanafredda Briccotondo Barbera 2018
The nose is packed with black fruit, especially blackberries and plums, with slight spicy overtones hinting at black pepper and cinnamon. Sweet, soft tannins come together in a closely-woven texture that merges with the fruit, while a crisp freshness provides a long, tasty finish. A perfect match for starters, cured meats and fresh and medium mature cheeses.
